During what is now a three-game losing streak for the Maryland Terrapins’ baseball team (9-9), the losses have come in many different forms. On Tuesday, a blown-lead to Delaware resulted in a walk-off loss for the Terps. In the first game of their series against East Carolina (15-4) on Friday, the team fell in a low-scoring, pitching duel.
Then, East Carolina thwarted Maryland on Saturday, winning 18-4 to complete the Terps’ trio of losses.
The Pirates’ offense did most of their damage in the middle innings, scoring three, six, two and four runs in innings 4-7.
Andrew Henrickson, Spencer Brickhouse and Chandler Jenkins helped head the charge for the No.18 nationally-ranked team, with two hits apiece. Henrickson also had three RBIs. However, it was Brady Lloyd who had the most impressive offensive performance for the Pirates Saturday, who spraying out five single in five at-bats, leaving the Terps pitching staff unable to figure out how to keep him off base.
The group of Maryland pitchers began with starter Tyler Blohm, who struggled in his four innings of work, allowing six runs on six hits while walking five batters. Relievers Alec Tuohy, Elliot Zoellner and Billy Phillips also made appearances for the Terps along with Randy Bednar, who came off the bench to make his collegiate pitching debut. None faired well, however, giving up a combined 12 runs.
East Carolina also used five pitchers, but was able to limit the Terps’ offense. Starter Chris Holba, who entered the game with a 0.71 ERA, was once again solid on the mound for the Pirates, only allowing two runs in 5 ⅓ innings of work while picking up his fifth win in 2018.
A relief effort consisting of Austin Covers, Sam Lanier, West Covington and Zach Barnes kept the Maryland offense quiet even after Holba exited the ball game.
After failing to put up any offense last night in the shutout loss, the Terps were able to string across a few runs in game two, but the season-long struggle to hit with runners in scoring position continued. Although the team put up 11 hits, they still could not get the big hits that head coach Rob Vaughn has been looking for.
The one bright spot for the Terps offense was the performance of outfielder Marty Costes. The junior went 2-for-3 with a walk and is continuing to show signs of improvement after a poor start to this year’s campaign, increasing his average from 0.24 points on the afternoon.
The Terps will look to find a new groove tomorrow and avoid the sweep at 1 p.m. Hunter Parsons will take the mound looking to replicate his complete game performance a week ago.
