Sisters littered No. 4 Maryland field hockey’s roster heading into the season.

The Terps’ lineups boasted three pairs of sisters, with the Hollamon sisters being the most noteworthy. Josie Hollamon entered the season as a team captain while her younger sister — Jordyn Hollamon — entered as one of the most touted freshmen.

The duo shined on Sunday, scoring three times as Maryland (2-0) cruised past Villanova (0-2) 4-0 at the Maryland Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

In Maryland’s prior matchup against Stanford, it controlled the offensive tempo by generating a plethora of penalty corner opportunities. The Terps drew 14 penalty corners against the Cardinals and employed the same strategy against the Wildcats, drawing three within the first four minutes.

It took Maryland nine opportunities to capitalize on a penalty corner in its prior game, but it needed just three to secure a goal. Sophomore forward Ella Gaitan opened the scoring on Friday and did so again on Sunday.

Gaitan received the penalty corner feed from junior forward Maci Bradford before lacing a shot into the lower right-hand corner, giving the Terps a 1-0 lead just 3:24 into the opening quarter. Nearly ten minutes later, Maryland scored again.

Freshman Jordyn Hollamon entered College Park as one of the most touted freshmen in the 2025 class. Max Field Hockey’s No. 5-ranked freshman tallied her first point against Stanford, but recorded her first goal by redirecting a shot by Bradford. The score doubled Maryland’s lead with 1:35 remaining in the first quarter.

She then got her second career goal on a penalty corner, notching a 4-0 Maryland lead with 10:37 remaining in the fourth quarter. Dejuan Eikelboom assisted with the goal.

Josie Hollamon was steadfast on defense, creating multiple turnovers and making smart plays up the field, creating catalysts for fluid transitions down the turf. Josie Hollamon also got a chance to work the offensive side, getting a goal off a penalty corner in the fourth quarter on a shot into the lower left side of the net. The primary assist came from Bradford, giving her a game-high three assists.

While the Terps’ offense struggled in the middle quarters, its defense remained solid. Maryland held Villanova to just eight total shots and surrendered just two shots on goal. A large part of Maryland’s defensive success came from its speed in the midfield.

Head coach Missy Meharg emphasized the importance of speed through the midfield last season and expressed a continued desire to play fast this season. Her squad’s team speed was highlighted in the midfield as the Terp defenders swarmed the Wildcat attackers, minimizing their offensive opportunities and aiding in the team’s first shutout of the season.

The Terps will look to continue their winning streak on Friday and Sunday when they play No. 8 Boston College and No. 5 Duke. Duke beat Maryland twice last season, including knocking the Terps out of the NCAA Tournament.
