Junior Marty Costes suspended for weekend series

Maryland junior outfielder Marty Costes missed Friday’s contest against Purdue as a result of a team-imposed suspension, head coach Rob Vaughn told media after the loss.

“We have some different rules in our program,” said Vaughn. “Marty didn’t meet some of the team rules we had this week.”

Costes will miss the rest of the weekend series before rejoining the team at the start of next week.

“Marty’s gonna be back with us on Monday,” said Vaughn. “Him and I had a really good conversation, we talked through a lot of different things.”

Prior to the suspension, the Maryland outfielder was coming off a 2-for-4 performance in Tuesday’s 14-3 loss to VCU. The junior has been a staple in the Terps’ lineup all season, starting in 34 of Maryland’s 37 games this season.

However, his 2018 campaign has not been the strongest, as he currently holds a batting average of only .218 with three home runs.

Costes has made an instant impact since stepping on campus in 2016. During his freshman season, he led the team with nine home runs. In 2017, Costes earned First-Team All-Big Ten honors while batting .322 and hitting 13 home runs.

The Baltimore native was also a 25 round selection of the Houston Astros in the 2017 MLB draft.

The Terps’ April 24 contest against George Mason will be the first game Costes will be eligible to play in following the suspension.

“I’m confident that adversity is going to be thrown his way, and he’s going to respond the way he needs to respond to it,” said Vaughn.
