Maryland, Furman trade goals in 1-1 draw

The Maryland Terrapins women’s soccer team scored their only first half goal of the season on Sunday afternoon, but conceded a late second half goal that led to a 1-1 draw against Furman.

In their first three games of the season, the trend for the Terps’ offense was late scoring, as all seven of their goals had come in the second half or later. However, on Sunday afternoon, senior forward Chelsea Jackson bucked the trend by scoring at the 22nd minute in the first half. Jackson’s second goal of the season was assisted by freshman midfielder Mikayla Dayes.

Following the goal, the next 49 minutes of the game became a defensive battle as Maryland drew closer and closer to their fourth consecutive win. Then at the 71st minute mark in the second half, Furman’s Jenny Allen scored off a corner kick to tie the game at one. The goal from the senior forward was her first of the season.

For Maryland, it’s the second straight game that a late goal by the opposing team forced overtime.

In the overtime period, neither team was able to muster up anything on offense, resulting in 20 minutes of scoreless action and a draw.

Junior goalie Rachel Egyed had a solid day in the net for the Terps. Egyed recorded seven saves, a season high for her as the Paladins kept her busy with eight shots on goal. The Maryland defense has yet to give up multiple goals in a game during the 2017 campaign.

With the result, Furman now sits at 2-1-1 on the season while the Terps remain unbeaten with a 3-0-1 record.

Maryland will be back in action at Ludwig Field on Thursday night when they take on Richmond at 7:30 p.m. Once again, they will have a chance to surpass their win total from the entire 2016 season.
