The Terps stay undefeated this weekend at the Maryland Tournament, finishing with a win over Saint Peters today, 3-0.
Coming off last night’s dominant sweep against Princeton, the Terps extend their winning streak to six and start the year 7-1. The last time the Terps began the season this strong was in 2021, when the team started 13-0.
“I’ve been saying this a lot to the team and within the program that we just want to treat every day as what’s our best, and you know, not get caught up in wins and losses,” head coach Adam Hughes said. “I don’t think the team has talked about winning streaks at all.”
It only took Maryland an hour and fifteen minutes to dismantle Saint Peters.
Maryland did not allow Saint Peter’s to lead at any point, a complete shutout by the Terps.
Saint Peter’s was riddled with attacking errors throughout the match, recording 23 to Maryland’s three.
Maryland’s front court was dominant all game, with freshman Ava Brown, senior Sydney Bryant, and senior Eva Rohrbach all contributing 25 kills, along with 46 total attacks.
The first set was all Maryland, with the Terps getting off to a 6-0 scoring run. Maryland’s size advantage up front has proved pivotal to the dominance of the first set, with 4 total blocks. Saint Peter’s had 8 attacking errors in the first set. The Terps won the set 25-13.
Maryland had 10 blocks throughout the match, with the most coming from senior Eva Rohrbach, who recorded 3.5.
The same story happened throughout the second set for the Terps and Saint Peter’s. The Terps went on a 6-0 scoring run to make the score 11-2. One of the points came from
Eva Rohrbach, who contributed an ace. The set ended with 25-7.
The third set ended with the final score of 25-16. Freshman Ioanna Dimitriou laid down a big kill to make it 12-8.
Sophomore Sara Toth, coming off a 39-assist game against Princeton, had 29 against Saint Peter’s.
“I feel like there’s a lot of belief in this program, and if I mess up Eva or Haley’s first person coming, like I know you got that,” Brown said. “It’s like an I believe in you, and I know that you can get this.”
Ava Brown recorded over 16 kills and 9 block assists over the tournament weekend.
The Terps travel to Greenville, NC, to play against Campbell on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m.
