Maryland wrestling (4-1, 0-0 B1G) heads to Evanston, Illinois on Friday for its first Big Ten dual of the season – a matchup with Northwestern (2-1, 0-0 B1G) at 8:00 p.m. at the Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Terps are coming off a strong showing at the Southern Scuffle. Braxton Brown reached the finals at 133 pounds and Branson John placed third at 197 pounds, giving Maryland momentum as it begins conference play. Head coach Alex Clemsen, in his sixth season leading the program, has emphasized depth and high-pace wrestling.
The Wildcats, led by coach Matt Cyphert, have had mixed results this season. They lost their opener to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville before rebounding with wins over Princeton and Lock Haven.
At the recent Midlands Championships, which Northwestern hosted, the Wildcats placed several wrestlers on the podium, including No. 24 Sean Spidle (133 lbs), No. 30 Billy Dekraker (141 pounds), and No. 28 Eddie Enright (174 pounds) – a showing of their depth throughout the roster.
Both teams boast talented wrestlers in the national rankings who could potentially swing the match at their respective weights:
- At 125 lbs, Northwestern’s No. 28 Dedrick Navarro has been a consistent scoreboard presence and is one of the Cats’ highest-ranked wrestlers.
- The Terps’ No. 12 Braxton Brown will likely face the Wildcats’ No. 23 Spidle in a ranked matchup at 133 pounds. Spidle is a recent Midlands podium finisher who has battled top competition.
- In the middle weights, No. 12 Carter Young at 149 pounds and No. 5 Jaxon Smith at 184 pounds anchor Maryland’s national-ranked contingent and will be key to the Terps scoring.
- Northwestern’s only ranked wrestler in the upper weight classes is No. 31 Eddie Enright at 174 – a redshirt freshman with a 16-5 record on the year.
With both teams looking to build early Big Ten momentum, this dual could come down to how effectively Maryland’s highly ranked core handles the Wildcats’ depth and how Northwestern leverages its home crowd and tournament experience. The Terps won the last matchup between the two programs – a 29-15 victory that marked Maryland’s first win over the Wildcats since the Terps joined the Big Ten.
