The 2023 season is officially in the books for Maryland gymnastics. Despite a valiant effort, the No. 24 Terps came up short of earning a nod to the next round of the NCAA Regionals. They lost to No. 2 Florida (197.875), No. 15 Arizona State (197.525) and Penn State (196.825) Friday night in Pittsburgh.
Although the final result was not what the Terps hoped for, they finished the season on a high note. They notched a score of 196.675, a new record in their time competing at the NCAA Regionals. Maryland finished the season 17-11, while maintaining a ranked status from Feb. 6 until the end of the season.
The Terps began the night on bars, where they started very strong, collectively scoring a 49.275. All six competing gymnasts recorded a score of 9.800 or higher, with three recording a score of 9.850 or higher (senior Aleka Tsiknias, sophomore Sierra Kondo, and sophomore Tasha Brozowski).
The Terps took on beam in the second rotation, scoring a collective 49.175. Senior Reese McClure and junior Elizabeth Debarberie both recorded 9.825s, while the young Maddie Komoroski and Josephine Kogler led the way. Komoroski, who was back in her hometown, notched a 9.850. Kogler, who served as the anchor, recorded a 9.900, which tied for the best individual score across all events for the Terps.
The Terps had their best event of the day on floor in the third rotation, per usual. The squad notched a 49.300 collective score, as five of six gymnasts recorded a 9.800 or above. Senior Emma Silberman, a longtime member of the program, left a mark in her final match, recording a team-best 9.900. She was followed up by Komoroski and junior Tayler Osterhout, who both finished with a 9.875.
In the final event of the day, vault, the Terps put forth a solid effort, but it resulted as their worst rotation of the day. Three out of six competing gymnasts recorded a 9.800 or higher, highlighted by graduate student Alexsis Rubio’s 9.825. Kogler and junior Olivia Weir followed her up at 9.800.
Although it was a disappointing finish, it was an excellent overall season which featured the Terps setting multiple new program records and laying the foundation for the future. Now led by young gymnasts, the Terps will will look to improve even further in 2024.
