No. 6 Maryland women’s lacrosse gets its third loss of the season against No. 16 Penn in a tight game, 13-12, on Monday in Philadelphia.

The Terps have had a strong season so far, but have dropped from their No. 4 spot to No. 6 after their loss to Northwestern. However, they were able to come back with their first game in program history against Oregon.

Maryland blew past the Ducks, 16-4, only allowing them a total of nine shots on goal versus the Terps’ 33 shots on goal. Penn had not beaten Maryland since 2007, so this was a big victory for the Quakers.

In the first quarter, Penn took the lead with the first two goals, but graduate student Kate Sites got off the first goal for Maryland, and senior Jordyn Lipkin tied it shortly after.

Both teams took turns leading throughout the quarter, but the Terps were able to go into the second quarter with a one-point lead, 4-3, after junior Kori Edmondson’s shot with about nine seconds left in the quarter.

It was a fairly even first quarter; Penn had a total of seven shots while Maryland had eight.

Going into the second quarter, the Terps had the lead, but not for very long. The Quakers were able to get the first three goals of the quarter and hold the Terps to only one goal in this period, scored by Edmondson.

Edmondson had a key play, stealing the ball and flying down the field 5-10 yards, making the two-point deficit just one. But Penn finished off on a roll, going into halftime with a three-point lead, the largest of the game.

In the third quarter, freshman Devin Livingston was able to get the first goal for the Terps, and Sites scored again. But Penn fired back, keeping its three-point lead going into the fourth.

Edmondson, sophomore Maisy Clevenger, and Lipkin each got at least one goal in the fourth quarter, one of which was Edmondson’s game-tying goal at 12-12.

But in the last 30 seconds, Penn’s Keeley Block scored, taking any hope away from the Terps and securing the win.

A victory for Penn had the whole team rushing the field; after 17 years, they were able to defeat the Terps. Maryland will continue on the road to Arizona State for its next game Thursday.
