Coming into Saturday’s game, No 7. Maryland Women’s Basketball looked to continue their non-conference dominance against Central Connecticut State. The Terps had beaten every non-conference opponent on their schedule, with most games being relatively uncompetitive.

That trend continued against the Blue Devils. Maryland (13-0) looked to refine their skills and walk away with a comfortable win against a struggling Central Connecticut State Team (0-11), and they did just that, cruising to a 98-30 victory.

The Terps’ offense was operating at a high level throughout the first quarter, generating 39 points on 71% shooting. The early charge was led by senior guard Yarden Garzon, who picked up 12 quick points on only six shots — all from three-point range.

“I work extremely hard on my three and my shot,” Garzon said. “I know the coaches want me to take the shot and feel comfortable.”

The offense continued to produce at a high level throughout the game, playing at a pace that CCSU couldn’t keep up with. The Terps logged 79 FG attempts during the contest, a testament to their relentless playstyle.

Maryland’s offensive attack was carried by standout performances from Yarden Garzon and Oluchi Okananwa with 25 and 22 points respectively – Garzon’s 25 was a season high.

Maryland’s defense — the team’s biggest strength throughout the year — showed its might in the second quarter. They held CCSU to just two points in the second and forced nine turnovers over the final five and a half minutes, allowing the Terps to head into halftime with a 39 point lead.

Defense translated into quick offense for the Terps. They were able to come up with 21 points off turnovers in the first half while also allowing zero for CCSU.

Coach Frese credited the team’s success to their dedicated preparation.

“This team is really bought in, they come ready to work every day. The staff has done a phenomenal job working hard through film and practice and getting every player to buy in.”

Friday’s game was the last of the non-conference portion of Maryland’s schedule. The Terps now have a short hiatus before welcoming Wisconsin to the Xfinity Center on Dec. 29.
