No. 4 Maryland field hockey (2-0) hits the road and travels to Newton, Massachusetts Friday as the Terps face off against No. 14 Boston College (1-1) as part of the B1G/ACC Cup.
Maryland looks for its third consecutive win to open the season, following home victories over Drexel and Stanford.
Maryland opened off its 2022 campaign with a dominant 7-1 showing over Drexel. Sophomore forward Hope Rose started off the new season strong with a two-goal, two-assist performance against the Dragons. Rose, the reigning Big Ten Freshman of Year, notched ten goals and four assists in her 2021 campaign.
Sophie Klautz, a freshman midfielder from The Netherlands, impressed in her first two outings, earning herself Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. In the season opener against Drexel, Klautz scored a pair of goals, and is tied with Rose and Dan Van Rootselaar for the team lead in goals.
In their most recent matchup on Monday, the Terps defeated Stanford in a tight contest, 1-0. The game’s lone goal came in the first quarter when Van Rootselaar fired in a strike from the top of the circle off a penalty corner. Van Rootselaar has played with aggression on offense early on, as she leads the Terps in shots on goal this season (13).
Maryland’s defense has limited opposing offenses in its first two games. The Terps have allowed only four shots on goal, and goalkeeper Christina Calandra is looking for her third straight shutout performance on Friday.
Conversely, Maryland’s offense has created opportunities to score, with 30 shots on goal in the first two games of the season.
Boston College enters the contest with a 1-1 record, as the Eagles won their season opener against Providence before falling against Old Dominion their last time out.
In the season opener against Providence, Boston College won in commanding style, 5-0. The offense was alive and aggressive for the Eagles, as they registered 21 shots on goal compared to just two for the Friars.
Boston College scored in every quarter and spread around the wealth. Five different Eagles scored a goal.
Senior forward Margo Carlin did it all for the Eagles against Providence, accounting for four points thanks to a goal and two assists. Carlin is tied for the team lead in points.
Most recently against Old Dominion, Boston College fell behind early and despite tying the game 2-2, allowed a goal to the Monarchs late in the fourth quarter that wound up as the game winner.
After a scoreless first half, Old Dominion scored two goals within eight minutes of each other in the third quarter to take a 2-0 lead.
Victoria Arra brought the game within one for the Eagles with a fast break goal late in the third, and Mia Garber tied the game in the fourth with a deflection off a corner shot.
With just over three minutes left in regulation, forward Marlon de Bruijne gave the Monarchs a 3-2 lead with her second goal of the game, and strong defense the rest of the way thwarted the Eagles’ comeback chance.
Head-to-head, Maryland leads the all-time series versus Boston College 14-3. The last time the teams faced off was September 3, 2021, when Boston College snuck away with a 3-2 victory over Maryland.
The game on Friday will start at 6 p.m. and will be take place at the Boston College Field Hockey Complex.
