University of Maryland students are gearing up for the men’s basketball “red out” game tonight as the Terps take on their first challenge of the year.

The Maryland Men’s Basketball Team is having its annual “red out” game, a yearly tradition for big matchup games. This year, the team hosts No. 15 Marquette for the year’s one and only run of the “red out” theme.

The students in the student section always get a free red T-shirt during the specific theme, to create a sea of red in the Xfinity Center, showing their Maryland pride. This year is a “Lego” theme.

For the freshmen students, this is their first go-around as a student experiencing the madness of the “red out.”

Quint Flannery, a freshman, is experiencing his first “red out” game as a student and is ready for all of the excitement to come tonight.

“I think the environment is going to give me chills,” Flannery said. “This place is going to be like nothing I’ve ever seen before. This is like me being a part of Maryland basketball history.”

However, for the older students, this isn’t their first rodeo, and they know the routine. Rasheed Matumla, a senior, considers himself “a veteran” when it comes to these “red out” games and is planning on embracing it for the last time.

“The fans really bring it, everyone is just alive and loud,” Matumla said. “I’m expecting this to be the biggest red out I’ve ever seen. I’m really excited for what is in store for the game.”

The student section will be sold out for tonight’s game, according to the University of Maryland Men’s Basketball Instagram post, with high spirits around College Park for the traditional “red out” game.
