Recap: No. 25 Maryland gymnastics finishes first in Temple Quad Meet

No. 25 Maryland gymnastics was looking for a strong response following last week’s disappointing performance at the Big Five Meet. On Thursday afternoon in Philadelphia, the Terps delivered.

The Terps (8-7) came out on top in the Temple Quad Meet, scoring a 196.600, their second-best on the road this season. Towson (22-3-1) finished with a 196.050, Temple (9-15) with a 195.275, and West Chester (13-7) with a 194.275.

The Terps started the day out on beam, where they drastically improved their score from last Friday, going from a 47.300 to a 48.825. That being said, there’s still certainly room for improvement, as the score is still low compared to most of the squad’s other beam scores so far this season. Sophomore Josephine Kogler once again led the way, notching a 9.825. Senior Reese McClure also had a strong performance, recording a 9.800. Senior Emma Silberman had another disappointing showing, scoring an 8.900, a season-low and an uncharacteristic score for the leader of the squad.

In the second rotation, the Terps competed on floor. Four of the competing gymnasts notched a 9.825 or higher, leading them to a first place finish in the event. Silberman bounced back with an impressive 9.825. McClure, in the anchor role, scored a team-best 9.875. Junior Taylor Osterhout recorded a 9.825, a new season-high.

Maryland had a phenomenal night on vault, scoring a 49.300, a season-best. Five of the six competing gymnasts recorded a 9.850 or higher. The young talent on the team flashed, as Kogler and freshman Taylor Rech led the way with 9.875 apiece. 9.875 is a new season-high for Kogler. Junior Olivia Weir also set a new season-high with a 9.850 showing.

The Terps finished the day on bars, taking the crown in another event. Half of the competing gymnasts scored a 9.875 or higher, with senior Aleka Tsiknias once again leading the way, as she scored an incredible 9.925. Perhaps the best part of the night for the Terps came when sophomore Tasha Brozowski recorded a career-high of 9.875 in her first time in the bars lineup this season.

Maryland will look to continue its momentum on Sunday, as it returns home to the Xfinity Center for the first quad meet it will host this season, when it welcomes New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Brown to town.
