Terps matchup with Spartans on senior night

For Terps seniors Zoe Clark, Kate Waters, Hope Gouterman, Natasha Ntone-Kouo and Madison Turner, Saturday night will be the last opportunity they have to play for the women’s soccer team at Ludwig Field.

The Maryland Terrapins women’s soccer team (7-7-2, 1-7-1) will finish their 2017 home schedule tomorrow night when they take on the Michigan State Spartans (6-10, 2-7) on senior night. Senior forward and leading scorer Chelsea Jackson will also be honored, although she is out for the season with an injury.

Four years have come and gone and for players like Gouterman and Turner, who have been cornerstones for the Maryland program, Saturday night will be their last chance to add to their incredible legacy.

Even though the Terps have had a tough stretch of losses, this season has been one to remember for the senior class. After struggling through a 2016 season that saw the Terps only pick up three wins, Maryland has more than doubled that this year.

What could make this season even more memorable is a win on senior night. For that to happen, the Maryland offense will have to turn it around. During their current five game losing streak, the Terps have only scored one goal in 454 minutes of play.

They may have a chance to find their groove against the Spartans, a team that has allowed 39 goals this season and an average of 2.44 a game. However, with Jackson and other leading scorer Mikayla Dayes both out for the season, the Terps will need other players to step up.

Defensively, the Terps will look for another big performance from junior goalie Rachel Egyed. Egyed was phenomenal in last week’s matchup against Penn State, making several tremendous saves and limiting an explosive Nittany Lions offense to only a late overtime score.

The Maryland goalkeeper will have her hands full, literally, once again against the Spartans. Although they do not have the same high octane offense as some other Big Ten teams the Terps have faced, Michigan State still has scorers that can strike at anytime including senior forward Jamie Cheslik and junior midfielder Lexy Warner, who have six and five goals respectively.

This game is a must win for both teams, as they are both on the outside looking in at the Big Ten Tournament and will need to win out and get some help to clinch a berth.

The matchup will take place at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field in College Park.
