Dallas Wings select Abby Meyers with No. 11 overall pick in 2023 WNBA Draft

Abby Meyers was expected to be picked in the WNBA draft, just not as high as her ultimate selection. Meyers went No. 11 overall to the Dallas Wings, joining Diamond Miller as the second Maryland top-15 pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft.

According to multiple experts, Meyers was expected to go later in the first round, including in ESPNs latest mock draft. But her name was called much higher than that Monday night.

A transfer from Princeton, Meyers excelled in her new role at Maryland, finishing as the Terps’ second leading scorer at 14.3 points per game. Meyers started in 34 out of the 35 games, playing the most minutes per game for the Terps.

Known as an elite three-point scorer, Meyers lived up to that reputation in her one season at College Park. Meyers shot 38.8 percent from deep, making 64 shots from beyond the arc this past season.

Meyers especially excelled in the last stretch of Maryland’s season, as she averaged nearly 16 points per game in the Terps’ final seven games of the season.

Not only was Meyers a big piece for Maryland with her scoring, her leadership qualities transferred over to the Terps as well. Meyers was elected as a captain in her lone year in College Park, as teammates and coaches raved about her energetic personality.

The senior joined Miller as a fellow draft pick, marking the first time since 2017 that two Terps were taken in the first round of a WNBA draft.

Meyers heads to a loaded Dallas draft class, who had four picks in the first round after the Wings traded for the No. 4 overall pick from the Washington Mystics. Joining Villanova’s Maddy Siegrist, the NCAAs leading scorer, UConn’s Lou Lopez-Senechal and Iowa State’s Stephanie Soares, the Wings completely reloaded their roster on Monday.

Dallas finished .500 last season with an 18-18 record, and fell in the first round of the playoffs to the Connecticut Sun.

Meyers will head to a Dallas ground with some loaded young players. She will hope to make her mark in her first season as one of four first round draft picks for the Wings.
