No. 7 Maryland women’s lacrosse (11-4, 6-1 Big Ten) defeated Rutgers after a late goal from Kori Edmondson with a little over four minutes left in the last quarter that secured their 8-7 victory on Wednesday.

A win that started to look uncertain for the Terps in the first half of the game.

A few of the Scarlet Knights’ players, names that hadn’t been prominent during their season, were setting the tone of the game early.

Rutgers (8-8, 2-5) was able to get four straight goals in the first half, holding the Terps to just two goals, one of which was at the end of the second quarter by senior Jordyn Lipkin, who was able to find the net against the Scarlet Knights’ zone defense that the Terps were having a hard time against.

With the struggle against Rutgers’ defense in the first half, the Scarlet Knights were able to keep a two-point lead going into the second half.

At the beginning of the second half, Maryland was slowly finding a bit of success against Rutgers’ zone as they started moving the ball faster and cutting, they were able to put up two goals while only allowing Rutgers one in the start of the third quarter.

Sophomore JJ Surnio played a big role in this win for the Terps, playing one of her best games of the season with a total of 11 saves.

Lipkin was able to tie the game at the start of the fourth quarter. Then Edmondson had two back-to-back goals about 53 seconds apart, giving the Terps their first real lead of the game.

The Scarlet Knights were able to tie the game 7-7, but Edmondson was able to get off a late goal, and the Terps’ defense held strong to take the victory home.

This is Maryland’s second-lowest scoring game, tying with their game against Ohio State and Northwestern being their lowest of them all.

The Terps will take on No. 8 Johns Hopkins at home for their last regular-season game on Saturday.
