Maryland gymnastics opened their season on Friday night in the Terrapin Quad Meet against the George Washington University Revolutionaries, Long Island University Sharks, and University of New Hampshire Wildcats.

The Terps (3-0, 0-0 B1G) took the lead after the first rotation with a score of 49.000. This momentum carried Maryland to finish with a score of 98.000 – and to continue leading even after the second rotation. The third and fourth rotations showed consistency and impressive skills from the Terps, allowing them to solidify their win over the three traveling teams.

The Terps took to the vault for the first rotation. New York state native Josephine Kogler was up first for Maryland, scoring a strong 9.700. Logan Buckmon and Katrina Mendez-Abolnik followed, each scoring a 9.850 to give Maryland the lead through the first rotation.

The University of New Hampshire performed clean choreography on the balance beam. The Wildcats finished behind the Terps with a 48.550, with the help of Gwen Ockerbloom’s 9.825 score.

George Washington took on their toughest event during the 2025 season – the uneven bars. For the Revolutionaries, Lola Montevago obtained the highest score of 9.775, allowing her team to finish with a 48.425.

Long Island University trailed behind with a finishing score of 47.825. A 9.725 from Danyella Holmes helped the Sharks remain in the meet.

The uneven bars were the next event for the Terps. Sarah Saville began by scoring a 9.775. Towson transfer Chelsey Dennis followed suit, sticking her landing in her Maryland gymnastics debut. Junior Gianna Ruffing scored highest for the Terps with a 9.850, bringing Maryland’s total to 98.000 after two rotations.

The University of New Hampshire trailed behind with a finishing score of 97.250. Serena Mullin received the highest score for the Wildcats with a 9.825.

Eden Stippick scored a 9.775 for Long Island University, helping the Sharks finish with a 95.775.

George Washington could not execute enough on the balance beam, leading to the lowest score of 95.700. While the individual scores of George Washington gymnasts did not total up to the leading Terps, Deana Sheremeta scored the highest for the Revolutionaries with a 9.850.

Holding the lead heading into the third rotation, Maryland demonstrated that it could balance the pressure even on the beam.  With graceful movements and technical skills, the Terps continued holding the overall lead with a 146.625. Freshman Emily DeFrees stuck her double twist dismount. Maddie Komoroski continued to display her strengths in the balance beam, finishing with the highest score of 9.850.

New Hampshire continued to follow behind the Terrapins, finishing the rotation with a 145.725. Ockerbloom, a strong asset for the Wildcats during the first rotation, scored highest amongst her team with a 9.775.

George Washington pushed through their second rotation obstacles, taking third place with the help of Sheremeta. A 9.825 on floor displayed her versatility on both floor and beam.

Following with the lowest score, Long Island University took on the uneven bars, finishing with a 142.675. Brisa Carraro scored highest for the Sharks with a 9.675. While the Terrapins continued to hold a strong lead, the match would come down to the fourth rotation.

In the meet’s final rotation, Maryland gymnastics displayed full artistry and skill on the floor. Electric routines from DeFrees and Komoroski scored highest at 9.850.

New Hampshire competed on the uneven bars finishing with a 194.375. Both Mullin and Zoe Arthur scored 9.800, helping the Wildcats to finish in second place.

George Washington finished third. With the help of Alison Mun’s 9.875 on vault, the Revolutionaries finished with a 193.200.

Long Island finished in fourth with a 190.350 behind Raphaëlle Perreault’s 9.600 beam routine.

The Terps will next compete against Washington University on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
