Maryland men’s lacrosse will be the No. 4 seed in the 2023 NCAA tournament, the committee announced Sunday night. The Terps will take on Army at 7:30 p.m. at SECU Stadium on Saturday.

Army earned the Patriot League’s league automatic berth and will be making its 18th NCAA tournament appearance in program history and first appearance since 2019.

Maryland underwent an up-and-down season after losing one combined game over the last two years. Its five losses entering the NCAA tournament are its most since 2012.

The Terps had some highs, such as their victories over then-No. 1 Virginia, the No. 1-seed in the Big Ten tournament in Penn State, and No. 4 Johns Hopkins in the Big Ten tournament semifinals.

But coach John Tillman’s group also had some ugly games, including Loyola’s 12-7 upset win in the second week of the season and this past weekend’s no-show against Michigan in the Big Ten tournament final.

This will be Maryland’s 45th NCAA tournament appearance in program history and its 20th-straight season making the tournament.

Among Army’s 12 wins this season is a 14-13 victory over Rutgers, part of a nine-game win streak. Each of its three losses have come within two goals, including a narrow 11-10 loss to No. 8-seed Cornell.

This will be the first matchup between the schools since 2004.

If the Terps advance past the first round they will face the winner of No. 5-seed Penn State and Princeton on May 21st in Annapolis. The Terps defeated both of those teams in the regular season.
