Two goals in the span of four minutes by Northwestern would decide the fate of the Maryland Terrapins women’s soccer team on Sunday as the Terps fell to the Wildcats by a score of 2-0.
Northwestern was able to jump out to an early lead that they would never relinquish. At the 16:08 mark, Northwestern junior midfielder Brenna Lovera opened up the scoring with her second goal of the season.
Four minutes later, the Wildcats struck again when junior Hannah Davison scored her first goal of the season. Junior midfielder Marisa Viggiano assisted on both of Northwestern’s goals off of corner kicks.
With a quick two goal advantage, the Wildcats’ defense settled in and prevented the Terps from making a comeback. Maryland had few opportunities, finishing with five shots on goal, but Northwestern senior goalkeeper Lauren Clem saved every shot that came her way.
The Terps’ offense was once again without freshman forward Mikayla Dayes. Dayes has now missed the past five games with a knee injury and her absence was felt today as Maryland struggled to get anything going on offense.
The Terps have now been shutout in two of their past three games and have only scored one goal in their last 270 minutes of play.
It was also a tough day for the Maryland defense and in particular junior goalie Rachel Egyed. Egyed’s two goals allowed matched a season-high, and she was substituted out after the first half by Erin Seppi. The Terps began the season by not allowing multiple scores in any of their first seven contests but have now given up two scores in two of their past three games.
The win gives Northwestern a record of 5-4-2 and 2-1-1 in conference play. Their next matchup will be against Indiana.
As for Maryland, they now sit at 7-2-1 and 1-2 in Big Ten play. After a three game road trip, the Terps will be back home on Friday for a matchup against Wisconsin at Ludwig Field.
