The Maryland Terrapins women’s soccer team finished the entire 2016 season with only one Big Ten win. But thanks to Kate Waters’ goal in the final minutes of regulation, the Terps now have the same amount of wins with nine fewer games, as they picked up their first Big Ten win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Illinois.
The Terps’ offense was relatively quiet for most of the game as they were held scoreless for the first 83 minutes of regulation. Then, just as the game looked like it was going to head to overtime, senior midfielder Kate Waters shot a ball from the right side that hit the post and bounced into the goal, giving Maryland a late lead.
There was no better time for the senior to record her first goal of the season; the Maryland offense had been on a 173 minute scoreless drought. With scorer Mikayla Dayes once again out of the lineup from a knee injury, Waters stepped up and delivered for her team.
Although it was the only score of the game, the Terps had plenty of chances on offense as they put 10 shots on goal. Senior Madison Turner and sophomore Jlon Flippens led the way with five and four shots respectively.
After giving up multiple goals for the first time in 2017 to Rutgers last Sunday, the Maryland defense got back to its stingy ways on Friday night. The Terps held the Fighting Illini to only nine total shots with five being on goal.
Sophomores Kelly Maday and Arianna Veland each finished with three shots, but neither put anything in the back of the net.
Junior goalie Rachel Egyed finished the game with five saves as Maryland recorded their fourth shutout win of the season.
The loss drops the Fighting Illini to 3-8 and 0-3 in Big Ten play for the season. The team’s next matchup will take place on Sunday when they welcome Rutgers to town.
As for Maryland, they get back into the win column and now sit at 7-1-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. Maryland will take a short trip to Chicago where they will face off with Northwestern Sunday at 2 p.m.
