The Maryland Terrapins have struggled early in many games this season. That wasn’t the case tonight against Northwestern.

First half success translated into a convincing victory as the No. 4 Terps (13-1, 2-0 B1G) downed the Wildcats (13-2, 1-1 B1G) 72-59 on Saturday.

By the under-12 media timeout, the Terps had jumped out to a 15-6 lead. At the half, the Terps had doubled the Wildcats’ offensive output, leading 40-20.

Guard Rasheed Sulaimon paced the Terps offensively in the first half; he scored 13 points, making all five of his field goals and three threes. He also grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists in the early part of the game.

Center Diamond Stone continued his hot streak. After tallying 39 points against Penn State on Wednesday, the most by a freshman in program history, Stone made all four of his field goals and scored eight points in the first half in Evanston, Ill.

Point guard Melo Trimble assisted seven baskets and scored seven points in the first half. He finished the game with a team leading 24 points, eight assists and eight rebounds.

The Terps expanded on a 20-point halftime advantage and led by as much as 22 in the second half. Though the Terps won by 13 points, the final score was the closest the game had been in 24 minutes and 50 seconds.

The Terps will take on Rutgers and look to improve to 3-0 in Big Ten play in College Park on Wednesday night.
