Hawkeyes dominate struggling Terps 4-0

On Thursday night in Nebraska, the Maryland Terrapins women’s soccer team had a rough night, as they were shutout 3-0. On Sunday in Iowa City, things got even rougher for the Terps as they fell to Iowa 4-0.

An own goal by Maryland, only one minute and six seconds into the contest, was a sign of things to come for the Terps. Only seven minutes later, Hawkeye sophomore forward Olivia Fiegel scored her sixth goal of the season.

With that goal, Iowa had a quick 2-0 lead. The score also meant the Terps have now allowed multiple goals in six of their last seven contests.

Iowa would add another goal in the 22 minute making it 3-0. A score by sophomore forward Devin Burns pushed Maryland’s streak of allowing three or more goals to three consecutive games. The goal was Burns’ eighth on the season.

With the game already out of reach, a late goal by senior midfielder Karly Stuenkel made it 4-0 and all but sealed the game. The four goals allowed by the Terps is a season high.

The defensive struggles for the Terps have been the main reason the team has dropped five of their last seven contest. Besides allowing a season high in goals, the Terps also allowed a season high in shots on goal with 13.

Junior goalie Rachel Egyed continues to struggle early on in games, as a majority of the goals allowed have come in the first half.

Egyed was eventually replaced by sophomore goalie Erin Seppi at halftime of this contest.

What made matters even worse for the Terps was that the offense could not get anything going. Maryland only finished with four shots on goal and has now only scored one goal in their last three contests.

With the win, Iowa improved 7-5-1 and 2-3-1 in the Big Ten. As for the Terps, the loss drops them to 7-5-2 overall with a 1-5-1 record in the conference.

The Terps will be back in action at home on Thursday when they take on Ohio State at 7 p.m.
