The Maryland Terrapins women’s soccer team’s season has been one full of trends in 2017.
The Terps started off the season 6-0-1 behind strong play from their defense. Then, in the following five games, Maryland went 1-3-1 in large part due to defensive struggles.
On Thursday night against Nebraska (8-3-2, 2-1-2), the Terps continued that trend allowing multiple goals for the fifth time in their last six contests, falling to the Cornhuskers 3-0.
In the past two contests for Maryland, it had been the early goals that led to a loss and tie. However, against Nebraska it was goal conceded in the second half that doomed the Terps.
The second half belonged the Nebraska’s Haley Hanson. The senior midfielder scored in the 46th minute and then again in the 61st minute to give the Huskers a comfortable 3-0 lead that they never relinquished. The scores were her sixth and seventh of the season.
The Cornhuskers opened up the scoring towards the end of the first half when freshman midfielder Theresa Pujado’s shot in the 37 minute scooted by Maryland junior goalie Rachel Egyed.
Although Rachel Egyed’s night in goal was not the greatest, she did have some incredible saves including a penalty kick save in the 28th minute.
It was also a tough night for the Maryland offense as the Terps could only muster up three total shots and none on target. The absence of leading scorers Chelsea Jackson and Mikayla Dayes, who are both out for the season with injuries, continued to take its toll on Maryland.
The Terps have now been shutout in three of their last five contests.
With the loss, Maryland drops to 7-4-2 with a 1-4-1 record in Big Ten play. The Terps will have another tough matchup on Sunday when they head to Iowa City to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes at 2 p.m.
