In the Maryland basketball team’s last game against St. Francis, center Diamond Stone came off the bench for the first time his collegiate career. Forward Damonte Dodd made his first start of the season.
On Tuesday against Connecticut, Stone came off the bench once again. He entered the game for forward Robert Carter Jr. after one minute and 37 seconds and continued to succeed.
With Stone playing quality minutes off the bench and point guard Melo Trimble leading the way, the No. 6 Terps defeated the Huskies 76-66 and improved to 8-1.
Trimble led all players in scoring with 25 points; he made five of ten field goals and 14 of 15 free throws. Stone scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds off the bench; six of his rebounds were offensive.
Guard Daniel Hamilton paced the Huskies offensively with 23 points. He made three threes, the most of any player.
The Terps jumped out to an 18-point lead, their largest of the game, with three minutes and six seconds left until halftime.
In the second half, the Huskies pulled within three with two minutes and 44 seconds remaining when Hamilton nailed a triple on the left wing to make it 67-64.
The Terps stayed composed and closed the game out on a 9-2 run under Trimble’s five converted free throws.
The Terps will take on Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday.
