Two teams with almost identical records will square off on Thursday night as the Maryland Terrapins women’s soccer team (7-3-2, 1-3-1) will head to Lincoln to take on Nebraska (7-3-2, 1-1-2).
For both teams, the game is a chance to get back to their winning ways after a rough start to Big Ten Play.
After starting off the season 6-0-1, it has been tough sledding for the Terps throughout conference play thus far. Against Big Ten competition, Maryland has a 1-3-1 record and is being outscored 9-4.
The defense has been a big problem for the Terps, as they have given up multiple goals in four of their last five matchups after not allowing two or more goals in their first seven games of the season.
During this stretch, the Terps have conceded a lot of goals early in games , which makes it harder for the Terps to crawl back. Although they were able to do so against Wisconsin on Friday, Minnesota’s two early scores on Sunday buried the Terps before they could even get settled in.
Maryland’s defense will have their hands full once again on Thursday as the Cornhuskers have a powerful and balanced offense. The attack is led by Elyse Huber who has six goals on the season and Haley Hanson who has scored five. Besides this one-two punch, Nebraska also has eight other players who have scored a goal in 2017.
Nebraska’s defense will also present a challenge for the Terps’ offense, which has had to find new scoring options recently. With senior forward Chelsea Jackson and freshman forward Mikayla Dayes both out for the season, Maryland will need players like freshman Gi Krstec, who scored her first goal over the weekend, to fill the void of Jackson of Dayes.
It will not be easy sledding in this matchup, as Nebraska has only allowed seven goals in 12 games. Goalie Aubrei Corder has been sensational in 2017, recording six shutouts while having a save percentage of .806.
The game will take place at 8:05 p.m. in Lincoln, Nebraska.
