Two goals in 77 seconds help Terps down Navy

For a game that consists of 90 minutes of play, it was a brisk 77 seconds of play that would determine the fate of the Maryland Terrapins women’s soccer team. Two quick scores in the span of one minute and 17 seconds gave the Terps a lead that they would not relinquish, as they cruised to a 3-0 victory over Navy on Sunday night in College Park.

After the first 60 minutes of play, it seemed as if the match was going to be a defensive battle. Then at the 60:44 mark, Maryland senior forward Chelsea Jackson, who led the team in goals and points in 2016, opened up the scoring with her first goal of the 2017 campaign. Freshmen Mikayla Dayes and Mary Johnston assisted the score.

Before most fans had the chance to sit back down after celebrating the score, the Terps would add another goal thanks to a strike from sophomore midfielder Jlon Flippens on a 25 yard free kick from the left corner. This was also Flippens first score on the young season.

All of the sudden, Maryland found themselves in a comfortable position to pick up their second straight win, when it seemed like a tight game only a few minutes earlier.

However, just to be safe, junior forward Jarena Harmon added a goal at 84:11 to secure a Terps win. The goal was assisted by senior Kate Waters and freshman Anissa Mose.

The Maryland offense only had 10 shots the entire game, but made the most of their opportunities by putting three of those shots past Navy goalie Sydney Fortson.

On defense, the Terps only allowed Navy 10 shots. Four of those shots were on goal and Maryland junior goalie Rachel Egyed was there to save all four of those opportunities.

With the win, the Terps advance to 2-0 on the season giving them an excellent chance to exceed their win total from the 2016 season, which was three games. With the loss, Navy fall to 0-2 on the season. Maryland will be back in action Friday in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, when they take one Gardner Webb at 7 p.m.
