Maryland volleyball drops five-set thriller against Indiana, 3-2

As Indiana extended its lead to 10-8 in the fifth set, Maryland searched for a way to still come out on top. Now tied 11-11, an Indiana kill and a service ace put the Hoosiers up two, 13-11, two points away from taking the fifth set and the match.

An Indiana service error and a kill by Csire tied the set at 13-13, forcing an Indiana timeout. After the timeout, an Indiana kill put the Hoosiers within one point of the set win, but a ball handling error by the Hoosiers tied the set 14-14.

With the score 15-15, an Indiana kill once again put the Hoosiers within one point from winning the set. Despite Maryland’s efforts to tie the set and keep hopes alive, an attack error gave Indiana the point needed to take the set, 17-15, and take the match, 3-2.

Maryland volleyball battled Indiana in its first home match of conference play.

A service ace by Indiana junior Savannah Kjolhede gave Indiana the first point of the match.

Seeming to be off to a jittery start, multiple Maryland attack and service errors helped give Indiana the lead, 6-3. Trying to close the three-point gap, Indiana errors helped the Terps make it a one point set.

Continuing a tight set, a monster kill by freshman Laila Ivey tied the set, 7-7, and a block from Anastasia Russ and Ivey gave the Terps their first lead of the game, 8-7.

Trying to maintain their lead, the Hoosiers tied the set again at 10, but Maryland responded with a run of its own, taking a 15-12, causing an Indiana timeout.

Indiana scored the first point after the timeout but an impressive behind-the-back kill by junior Sydney Dowler on the following point put the Terps up 16-13.

A few points later, three Indiana kills helped the Hoosiers take a 19-17 lead. Another kill by Kjolhede followed by a service ace put Indiana up 21-18, causing a Maryland timeout.

Following the timeout, kills and a block from Sam Csire and Rainelle Jones put the Terps within one point, 21-20, forcing Indiana to call a timeout. After the timeout, a kill by Jones tied the set at 21.

Indiana took the lead back due to two errors from Maryland, putting the set within two points, 23-21. Continuing with momentum, Indiana won the first set, 25-21.

The Terps striked first in set two, but Indiana quickly answered back.

The Terps and the Hoosiers continuously found themselves tied throughout the early stages of the second set. Indiana gained a 7-5 lead and kept the lead well into the middle of the set 12-8, but a kill from Csire followed by an attack error from the Hoosiers put the Terps within striking distance.

After Maryland trimmed its deficit to two, Indiana extended its lead to 20-14 as the second set neared the end.

Seeming to find those same jitters that held them to a slow start in the first set, the Terps found themselves down 23-15. Indiana closed out the second set, 25-16, to go up 2-0 in the match.

Indiana held Maryland to a .207 hitting percentage in the second set.

The Terps started the third set off strong, 2-1, but the Hoosiers went on a 3-0 run, and ultimately took a 4-2 lead.

Towards the middle of the set, Indiana found itselves with a three point lead, 11-8, but a kill by Csire and by a service ace from Dowler helped make it a one point set for the Terps, 11-10.

Finding momentum, Maryland tied the set, 12-12, before taking a 13-12 lead due to a service ace by graduate student Gen Grimshaw.

Hoping to pick up their first set win, the Terps’ lead seemed to loosen after the Hoosiers went on a 3-0 run, tying the set, 20-20. An attack error from Indiana put Maryland within four points to win the set, but another attack error, this time from Maryland, put Indiana within four points as well.

Keeping its momentum, two attack errors from Indiana gave Maryland the lead, 23-21, but two back-to-back kills from Indiana turned the set into a nail biter, tied 23-23. An attack error from Maryland gave the Hoosiers the lead at 24-23, causing a Maryland timeout.

After the time out, an Indiana service error tied the score, and two more Hoosier errors gave Maryland the set win, 26-24.

Maryland outscored Indiana in points (26) and blocks (four) in the set, while the teams tied in total kills (11) and aces (two). The teams even found themselves with roughly the same hitting percentage, as Maryland registered a .125 percentage and Indiana registered a .129 percentage.

Maryland built off its strong finish in set three with a 3-0 lead in set four, but despite Maryland’s lead, Indiana quickly tied the score at three.

The Terps held a 13-11 lead in the fourth set, searching to extend the match to a fifth. Keeping the lead, a powerful kill by Russ extended the Terps’ lead to 17-14. A few points later, a kill by Grimshaw put Maryland ahead 23-18, forcing Indiana to call for a timeout.

A kill by Russ gave the Terps set point, and a serve ace by Dowler gave Maryland the fourth set win.

Looking to be the first to fifteen in the fifth set, the Hoosiers scored first but the Terps quickly gained a 3-1 lead. The Terps extended their lead to four after a kill by Jones, forcing an Indiana timeout.

Going on a 3-0 run of their own, a service ace by Indiana made it a one point game, 6-5, and an Indiana kill on the next point tied the set at 6-6. Maryland put itselves back in front, 8-6, after two back-to-back kills by Csire.

It wasn’t easy, but Indiana closed out the set 17-15, clinching the match win.
