Maryland volleyball fought for a fifth set win over Indiana to finish out its season, after a back-and-forth match up to that point.
After a solo block from sophomore Erin Morrissey, followed by an Indiana attack error, the Terps stood within four points of a fifth set win, 11-5. Two kills from junior Morgan Geddes kept Indiana’s hopes alive, but an Indiana attack error shortly after put the Terps within two of a win, 13-7.
Despite another kill by Geddes, a block from graduate student Rainelle Jones and junior Sam Csire give the Terps the 15-8 set win, and the 3-2 match win to end their season on a high note.
To start the first set, the Terps took an early 3-1 lead against the Hoosiers, but Indiana battled back and the set became tied at eight. The Terps quickly regained their lead, 13-11, after a kill by Csire, followed by a block by Jones and junior Sydney Dowler, which forced an Indiana timeout.
Following the timeout, the Hoosiers tied the score back even after a kill by sophomore Mady Saris followed by a Maryland attack error. Later, on a 3-0 scoring run, the Terps continued to extend their lead to 20-16.
After going up 23-20, a bad set from Indiana followed by a kill by redshirt senior Anastasia Russ gave the Terps the first set win, 25-21.
Indiana opened up the second set with a strong 7-2 lead, and later extended its lead to 13-5 after going on a 3-0 run. A block from junior Savannah Kjolhede and sophomore Camryn Haworth gave Indiana a 19-9 lead, Indiana went on a 7-1 run to close out the second set, taking it 25-10.
After the third set started tied at five, Indiana soon took a 11-8 lead over Maryland after a Maryland service error. On a 3-0 scoring run, Indiana extended its lead to 14-9. A 3-1 run from the Terps helped Maryland close in on the Indiana lead, and eventually trailed 19-17 after a block by Russ and junior Laila Ricks, which forced an Indiana timeout.
Following the timeout, Indiana extended its lead to 21-17 after back-to-back kills. A 3-0 run from the Hoosiers shortly after brought Indiana within two points of the third set win, 23-17. A 3-1 run from the Terps kept the set alive, but a kill by freshman Candela Alonso-Corcelles won the set for Indiana, 25-20.
Maryland opened the fourth set on a 3-0 run, before Indiana went on a run of its own to tie the score at three. A kill by Jones quickly after gave the Terps a 5-4 lead over Indiana, and eventually a 4-0 run from the Terps gave them a 12-9 lead over the Hoosiers, which forced an Indiana timeout.
Following the timeout, a kill by Saris put Indiana within two points of the Terps lead, 14-12. Soon after, a Maryland attack error made it a one point game, 19-18.
Despite Indiana closing in on Maryland’s lead, the Terps went on a 4-1 run, led by a kill by Csire to put the Terps within two of the fourth set win. Quickly following, another kill by Csire sealed the set for the Terps, 25-20, which forced a fifth.
Maryland took a 4-0 lead over Indiana to open the final set. The Terps extended their lead to 7-4 after a kill by Jones and multiple attack errors from the Hoosiers. Maryland continued to extend its lead in the fifth despite multiple kills from Geddes, and a block by Russ and Csire in the end clinched the 15-8 set win over the Hoosiers.
In an up-and-down 2022 campaign, Maryland volleyball capped off its season with a win.
