Trailing two sets to one, Maryland volleyball looked to force a fifth set against No. 19 Purdue.
Tied at 22 in the late stages of the set, Maryland called a timeout as the Terps looked for the answer to keep the match alive.
After a string of kills and errors that brought the set tied at 28, a kill and a service ace from Raven Colvin clinched the set win, 30-28, and the match win, 3-1.
A kill from freshman Eva Hudson gave the Boilermakers an early 3-2 in the first set, but later, multiple Purdue attack errors put Maryland ahead, 7-5.
The Terps extended their lead into the middle of the set, but a kill by senior Maddy Chinn helped the Boilermakers trim their deficit to three, 12-9. Finding momentum, the Boilermakers went on a 3-0 scoring run, and eventually tied the set at 17.
Near the end of the set, a kill by freshman Laila Ivey put Maryland ahead by one, and another Purdue attack error to follow forced a Purdue timeout. Following the timeout, a kill followed by a block for the Boilermakers trimmed their deficit to one, 22-21.
After a Maryland attack error tied the set, a kill by junior Sam Csire put the Terps back in front. A 3-0 run from the Terps, led by a clutch kill by graduate student Rainelle Jones, gave Maryland the first set win, 25-22.
Purdue went on a 5-0 run early in the second set, but the Terps responded with a run of their own to tie the set at five. Later, a Hudson kill gave Purdue a 10-5 lead, which forced a Maryland timeout.
After the timeout, Purdue extended its lead to 14-8 after a service ace by Colvin. The Terps cut the Boilermakers’ lead to five after a service ace by sophomore Erin Engel, but Purdue responded well to go ahead 19-12 later in the set.
Another 3-0 run from the Boilermakers put them within two points of the second set win, 23-13, and they eventually won, 25-15.
Keeping momentum from the previous set, Purdue took an early 5-2 lead to start the third. Despite a kill from Jones, Purdue extended its lead to 7-4 after a block assist from Colvin and Hudson. Soon after, a 3-0 run from the Terps tied the set at seven.
Continuing with momentum, Maryland took the lead after a kill by Ivey. However, Purdue went on a 3-0 run of its own to take back its lead at 12-10. Well into the middle of the set, Purdue extended its lead to five after a service ace by senior Maddie Schermerhorn.
Looking to close in on Purdue’s lead, a kill by Csire followed by a Purdue attack error put Maryland within two, 17-15, which forced a Purdue timeout. Following the timeout, the Terps continued to close in on Purdue’s lead, resulting in a tie set before a block by junior Sydney Dowler gave the Terps the lead, 19-18.
Purdue regained its lead after a kill, 22-21, and extended its lead all the way to the end of the set, winning the third 25-22.
Maryland took a 4-2 lead to start the fourth set after a block by Dowler and Jones, and the Terps extended their lead to 8-2 after going on a 6-0 run, which forced a Purdue timeout. The Boilermakers went on a 3-1 run shortly after, and eventually trailed 11-9.
Later, a 3-0 run from Purdue cut its deficit to just one, and the Boilermakers eventually tied the set at 15.
The Terps answered back with a 3-0 run to regain their lead at 18-16, which forced a Purdue timeout. After the timeout, Maryland extended its lead to 21-18.
Later, Maryland was forced to call a timeout after Purdue went on a 3-0 run to tie the set at 22. After the timeout, both teams were stuck in a back-and-forth affair, before a kill followed by a service ace from Colvin helped Purdue win the fourth and final set, 30-28.
Maryland will look to bounce back in its regular season finale on the road at Indiana on Friday.
