Just over two weeks ago, the Maryland Terrapins welcomed Ohio State into the Xfinity Center. In that contest, the Terps pummeled the Buckeyes 100-65.
When the two teams faced off in Columbus on Sunday, it was a much more competitive game.
The No. 8 Terrapins (19-3, 8-2 B1G) prevailed behind 20 points from point guard Melo Trimble and a double double from forward Jake Layman, earning a 66-61 victory and a season sweep of the Buckeyes (14-9, 6-4 B1G).
Ohio State jumped out to an 8-2 lead early in the game and led by as much as seven in the first half. The Terps recovered and held a 37-31 advantage at the break.
Layman led the Terps in the first half with 12 points and seven rebounds. He finished the game with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Four Terrapins finished with double figures. In his second consecutive start, center Diamond Stone posted 10 points and eight rebounds. Forward Robert Carter Jr. also reached double digits with 10 points, grabbing seven rebounds.
Free throw shooting played a role in the game, as well. Maryland attempted 23 free throws and Ohio State shot 24. The Buckeyes made 58 percent of their free throws, while the Terps converted 87 percent of their attempts, including 12 of 13 in the final six minutes and 27 seconds.
The Buckeyes last lead of the game was 51-50 with six minutes and four seconds left, but they hung around through the final minute.
The Buckeyes trailed by only two with two minutes and 32 seconds left but Melo Trimble hit a clutch three to put the Terps up by five 26 seconds later. 11 of Trimble’s 20 points came in the second half.
After a desperation three pointer to make it a three-point contest with six seconds left, Melo Trimble was fouled on the next possession. Trimble nailed both free throws and sealed the Terps victory.
The Terps will take on Nebraska in Lincoln on BTN Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. ET.
