Terps win another close one against Nebraska

In the past two seasons, the Maryland Terrapins are 19-2 in games that are decided by six points or less. While the Terps haven’t blown out many of their opponents, they’ve still managed victories, holding on in the last moments of games.

On Wednesday night, that’s exactly what they did.

In Lincoln, the No. 4 Terrapins (20-3, 9-2 B1G) did what they did best, eking out a close victory over the Cornhuskers (12-11, 4-6 B1G) 70-65.

Point guard Melo Trimble and Center Diamond Stone played a key role in the Terps’ victory. Trimble finished with 20 points on three three-pointers and seven of nine shooting from the charity stripe. Stone, the freshman phenom, nearly posted a triple double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 8 blocks.

As the game reached the final minutes, the Terps found themselves in somewhat of a familiar situation.

With eight minutes and 29 seconds remaining in regulation, Nebraska guard Tai Webster penetrated the right lane and found the basket for two points. The bucket prompted the Terps to take a timeout.

The Cornhusker faithful, filled with jubilation, danced to the tune of Sandstorm by Darude during the intermission. Nebraska held a three-point advantage and the Terps momentum appeared to be shrinking.

Out of the timeout, the Terps went on an 11-4 run. During the run, Trimble sank two threes and a free throw, Stone performed one dunk and forward Robert Carter Jr. added a pair of free throws.

With 8.2 seconds remaining in the game, Trimble sank two free throws. On the ensuing defensive possession, forward Damonte Dodd swatted down Webster’s desperation three to seal the victory.

It wasn’t a walk in the park, but it was a five-point win in the Cornhusker state for the Terps.

The Terps will be back in action Saturday at 4 p.m. ET with No. 18 Purdue (19-4, 7-3 B1G) in College park. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN.
